Adobe Photoshop Lesson 9&10

Objectives

  • Create type elements
  • Control the font attributes
  • Manage the type layers
  • Create paragraphs type
  • Warping the type
  • Using text a clipping mask
  • Apply special type effects

Type elements

  • Photoshop Type is made with vectors
  • Vectors are composed of lines and points

Using the Type Tools

  • Type options can be set in the Options bar
  • Point text is created by clicking on the image and typing (Click & Type)
  • A text box is created by clicking and dragging to add a text box to the image (Click & Drag)
  • To add type, click on the image with the type tool
    1. Type at the insertion point
    2. A new type layer is created

Controlling Type Attributes

  • Type attributes are controlled in the Character palette
  • Includes:
    1. Kerning, space between two or more letters
    2. Tracking, overall letterspacing
    3. Leading, overall spacing between lines
    4. Vertical/Horizontal Scale
    5. Baseline Shift
    6. Attributes (SuperScript, SubScript, All Caps, Bold, etc)

Type Layers

  • When they are linked, they will be moved as one layer
  • They can be merged into one
  • Merging or Flattening layers which contains type will rasterize the type
  • Rasterized type is not editable
  • Recommended to save a copy of the file in PSD format to preserve all data

Paragraph Type

  • A series of words created and ends after the user press Enter key
  • Can be copied from other source using the clip board
  • Can be placed in a text box in Photoshop

Distorting Type

  • Warp text dialog box containes 15 options for creating special text effects
  • Warping text allows you to fit text to specific design problems

Using Text as a Clipping Mask

  • Type mask can be used to add a gradient fill to text
  • Selection in the shape of type that can be filled is called type mask

Applying a style to Type

  • Can be applied to type layers
  • Can add drop shadow and bevel & emboss effects
